Enhancing Public Sector Action Through Climate Reporting

Date: September 16, 2024 | Time: - (UTC)

COMPLETED
IPSASB-IFAC-ACE-EU-Public-Sector-Event-Sept-2024

Join the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB), Accountancy Europe, the European Commission, and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) to discuss ongoing initiatives in the public sector and the next steps needed to address the climate emergency effectively.

As the world unites to combat climate change and preserve our planet, public sector participation is needed to ensure lasting change. To achieve global emissions targets, governments must use their regulatory powers and set policies that support sustainable development. Simply put, without public sector action, climate change will persist without mitigation.

Taking effective action will require significant investment at a time when public finances at a jurisdiction level are under significant pressure. This underlines the need for robust public financial management. Difficult decisions on trade-offs will be needed.

When climate-related sustainability information is reported on, governments can make better informed decisions about what actions to take to address the climate emergency, and those actions are more transparent. This transparency allows governments to be accountable for those actions and creates a feedback loop for continuous improvement.

Our event will:

  • Explore how a robust reporting framework underpins sustainable policies, fostering resilience in the face of uncertainty;
  • Delve into the use of climate data to inform decision-making to not only support action to ensure a sustainable planet, but also to ensure sustainable public finances; and
  • Reflect on the pivotal role of transparency and accountability in building bridges of trust between governments and citizens.
