Climate Responsive Public Financial Management systems are key enablers for informed climate decision-making by governments. Reporting on climate change is one of the most important issues in sustainability reporting, which also encompasses environmental, social and governance issues. public sector-specific sustainability reporting guidance to encourage transparency and accountability, enable better decision making and accountability of governments. This session will highlight the exposure draft for the public sector sustainability reporting standard issued by the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board.

Strong PAOs can contribute to and support the implementation of robust accounting practices in the public sector, which can result in better accountability and transparency. Finance professionals in public service must have the right skills to deal with the challenges and opportunities ahead. The panel will explore how partnering with the accountancy profession can help the public sector to attract and develop. The session will examine the role of the accountancy profession and actions necessary to ensure finance professionals have the tools to perform in the public sector. This session will also explore the opportunity of collaboration between the public sector and the accountancy profession to build their financial capacity and capabilities as part of the wider PFM improvements.

This session will explore the opportunities for collaboration between the accountancy profession and Supreme audit institutions to support PFM reforms as measured by Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (PEFA) framework and the adoption of IPSAS accrual standards. The session will provide an update on the status of PFM reforms and will feature a sharing of experiences and discussion by the panel on how a strong private and public sector accountancy profession supported by an effective and well-resourced professional accountancy organization (PAO) and Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) could support government to strengthen PFM and financial reporting and auditing.
