The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), World Bank, and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) are organizing a hybrid global roundtable on Islamic finance and the SDGs on November 1, 2023, to coincide with the Securities Commission-World Bank Conference on Social Impact Investment and Islamic Finance on November 2, 2023 taking place in Kuala Lumpur.

The roundtable presents an opportunity for experts to:

  • Highlight the natural alignment between Islamic finance and the SDGs, based on the Maqasid Al-Shariah (higher goals of Islam);
  • Examine and discuss some of the potential and challenges for harnessing Islamic finance to support the SDGs;
  • Showcase some practical progress made by Islamic financial institutions on the SDGs; including multilateral organizations, governments, and commercial banks; and
  • Showcase the role of Islamic social finance in achieving the SDGs.

By focusing on the natural alignment between the Islamic finance principles and the SDGs, we seek to drive engagement with, and acceptance of, the Goals among communities who might otherwise not engage with them worldwide.

The roundtable will feature a mixture of high-level discussions about the global trends in the Islamic finance industry, scholarly debate regarding harnessing Islamic finance to support the SDGs, and practical showcases of Islamic finance for SDGs in action.
