The pandemic presents both an enormous challenge and tremendous opportunities for reaching the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The pandemic also shows what is already inherent in the SDGs; the challenges faced cannot be dealt with in isolation. Leveraging this moment of crisis, when usual policies and social norms have been disrupted, bold steps can steer the world back on track towards the Sustainable Development Goals. This is the time for a profound systemic shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet.
Business has a fundamental role to play in delivering against the SDGs requirements. Contributions include working with stakeholders, creating jobs, enabling access to healthcare, innovating new technologies and leading the development and responsible use of resources such as energy and water. As for the accountancy professionals, the skillsets, organisational role and ethical commitment of accountants across the globe place the profession at the forefront of SDG planning and implementation. This is because accountants can influence widely, from developing new programmes of activity, to evidencing major successes, highlighting risk and proposing alternative courses of action.
This virtual CFO Circle event will feature Stathis Gould, who will cover the role of business, finance and accounting professionals in accelerating sustainability and long-term value creation and Faroze Nadar who will then cover the SDGs and the role of the profession in accelerating sustainability and inclusiveness, an overview of the sustainability landscape in Malaysia, developments in the sustainable finance space and UN Global Compact CFO Task Force as a call to action for Malaysian corporates.
